Poem - dance to freedom

2020

Weightless
Like a runaway balloon
Floating through the air
Skipping towards the moon
Dancing to the beat of the wind
Breaking free from the string
Is it a sin?

If it is not taut enough to stay
Yet not loose enough to stray
Gasping for breath
A silent strangled death
If it is not black or white
And all the colours hide in fright

Where did we bury our wings?
Turn the page and see what life brings
Puzzle pieces scattered across the floor
There are so many more than there were before
Fingers run across the empty spaces
Trying in vain to find the right places
Is this the jigsaw that must be solved
What do we think will be absolved

Both hands gripping
Locked tight
Nobody is letting go tonight
Slow dancing in the dark
Cheek to cheek
Turning in circles
We do not find what we seek

Swaying in turns
Shoes filled with cement
Eyes are closed
Squeezed tight
The weight of the world crushed your chest this night
Dust settles and fades
A flicker of light
A new energy fills the air tonight

A foot stretches out laboured and heavy
The first step is the hardest even if you feel ready
The sole brushes the ground
Reconnects with the earth
A memory is triggered
This is a rebirth

The page has turned
It is the next chapter
Take a deep breath in
Each move forward is a win
On the blank page
Every step prints fresh words
This is your story now
Stand up tall
Take a bow
